Bliss

It’s official, I’m off work for the summer.  Last Friday was the last teacher work day and my classroom is clean, my stuff is stored, and I’m home.  Home with my daughter for the next 8 weeks.  The teachers return to work August 4 for teacher work week prior to the first day of school but I’m trying not to think about that.  For those of you who belong to the “Teachers must have it so easy, they only work 10 months out of the year” camp let me quote my friend Maureen who once said, “If those parents could get inside my head at the end of the year, they would WANT me to have 8 weeks off before I taught their kids again.”

I’m not saying that taking care of my 6 month old is easy, but it is pleasurable in all aspects and therefore much more enjoyable in many ways than working.  So far today, though, I’ve gone running (2.5 miles in the heat – yick) and then the baby and I played, but she just went down for her nap and I have probably at least an hour and a half before she wakes up.  While she played with the puppy and her toys, I cleaned out some files in our cabinets at home and cleaned and dusted our living room.  My goal is one room a day, with some exceptions for closets.  For example, today I did the living room, but I’m going to be working on the coat closet (aka catch-all) for awhile.  Fun.

I don’t know if I’m going to get everything done that I want to – including putting new paint in the kitchen, dining room, and bathrooms – but I know there are books I want to read (both edifying and just … reading), time to spend with God, and time to watch TV that I don’t get to watch during the school year.  I’m going to soak up every minute of this summer.  And it all begins RIGHT NOW.

Now if only it weren’t 100 degrees out.
